Prophet Muhammad (saw) in the Qur’an
“Proclaim! In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, who created – created man, out of a leech-like clot. Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful, – He who taught (the use of) Pen, – Taught man that which he knew not.”
– Qur’an, Iqraa (Alaq) 1-5
With these words started what would become a source of guidance for millions of people around the world. The declaration or proclamation of which was to be done ”in the name of God” – the Creator. It wasn’t for any personal benefits to the Prophet (saw) who would soon suffer persecution, sorrow, and suffering.
No, he was not seized with madness (7:184) nor was the Prophet of God possessed (68:2). He had been sent unto all of us as the Messenger of God (7:158), as a witness (48:8) over us, appointed to warn (7:184,188) us of the fate that is to arrive, while at the same time give us glad tidings (48:8) of the good fortunes to come if we held on to our covenant with God. He was supposed to deliver revelation entirely as it was coming to him (11:12-14). What he was reciting was not the word of a poet (69:41) who draws upon his imagination, nor was it the word of a soothsayer (69:42) who merely pretends to foretell future events of no profound spiritual consequence nor was he inventing it of his own desires (69:44). No, it was nothing of what the Arabs had ever heard before, these were the words of God revealed to him by inspiration (6:19) and enough is God a witness to this fact (13:43).
It was part of God’s mercy that the Prophet (saw) was gentle in his dealing (3:159), who could never act dishonestly (3:161). He was sent as a mercy to the believers (9:61) and to all those that are created in the heavens and the earth (21:107), as a favor to them from their Lord (3:164, 4:170). He didn’t just act as a vehicle of God’s revelations to us, he would teach us and purify us through these revelations by guiding us in law and in wisdom (3:164), indeed in the Messenger of God would anyone find a beautiful pattern to follow (33:21). Though his work would be over only if he were to remind (88:21) us of the truths the Quran expounds, for he was not particularly asked by God to be our personal guardian or maintainer (6:107), yet he would exhaust himself in ways unimaginable for our own good (26:3, 9:128).
He was mocked (25:41-42) for his inspiration and revelation (18:110), this would distress him (15:97), yet he continued preaching with patience (16:127), asking no rewards in return (34:47). He is the Messenger of God (48:29), closer to us than our own selves (33:6). He is the end of Prophethood (33:40), it is only the hypocrites and the non-believers that resist him (58:22). Never mind how much the polytheists dislike it, it is God the most high who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth and he made it prevail (61:9) and enough is God a witness to this fact (48:28), never mind how much the disbelievers dislike it (61:8). Since he is the Messenger to all mankind (32:28), allegiance to him is allegiance to God (48:10). He is the most refined of character (68:4) and leads us from darkness to light (65:11). Without doubt God and His angels send blessings to the Prophet, we the believers send our salutations to him and pray to God to bless him in abundance (33:56).
